Jorge Eduardo Rojas reports 11,500 homes damaged in Manizales following August 10 earthquake

The Manizales City Council reported that approximately 11,500 homes were damaged and 1,505 were completely destroyed following the earthquake on August 10. Jorge Eduardo Rojas, the Mayor of Manizales, stated that the seismic event affected homes, schools, hospitals, and commercial locations. To address the financial needs of the reconstruction, the City Council approved a loan of 220 billion pesos. Jorge Eduardo Rojas noted that the city expects to receive at least 350 billion pesos from the national government to assist with the recovery. The municipal administration has initiated economic reactivation efforts for the 638 businesses that were critically impacted. These efforts have generated approximately 527 million pesos in gains for merchants. While 90% of the commerce in the city is active, some areas remain under intervention. Additionally, the administration ordered the preventive evacuation of the Solare 22 building due to the structural instability of the neighboring Versalles building, which is scheduled for demolition. The Versalles building was affected by the earthquake and is currently ceding toward the lower section.
