Amy Pope warns of worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan as conflict and flooding displace millions.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope reported that over 200,000 people have been newly displaced in Sudan’s Kordofan region due to intensified fighting and seasonal flooding. The conflict, which began in 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has resulted in the deaths of at least 59,000 people and forced approximately 14 million people from their homes. In the city of el-Obeid, drone attacks by the RSF have damaged critical infrastructure, including the main power transformer, affecting water supply, hospitals, and communication lines. Additionally, the IOM reported that nearly 14,000 people have been displaced from the Qaisan and Kurmuk localities in the southeastern Blue Nile state due to deteriorating security conditions and rising tensions. The combined impact of conflict, infrastructure damage, and heavy rains has stretched thousands of families beyond their limits, making Sudan one of the world’s largest displacement crises.
