British Army members competing in a boat race rescued a barn owl named Little Reg after it was found stranded 70 miles from the shore in the ocean. The bird, which typically prefers grasslands and farmlands, reportedly roosted on a docked fishing vessel that went to sea, leaving it stuck in open water. Army members spotted the bird falling into the sea several times before it flung itself onto their boat. The team looked after the other animal for a day while they circumnavigated Ireland and Great Britain. After the day of care, a lifeboat took Little Reg back to land for veterinary treatment. James Stannard, a conservation officer for the Barn Owl Trust, coordinated the resources to help the bird. Little Reg is currently receiving fluids, nutrition, and warmth at the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre. The center is seeking donations of heavy-duty cat beds to assist in the owl's recovery.
