Lin Chia-lung Joins Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau Amidst Several High-Profile Absences

Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung joined a mass of dignitaries in Palau this week for the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting. While Lin Chia-lung led a large Taiwanese business delegation, China's special envoy to the Pacific expressed serious concerns regarding Taiwan's presence at the summit. Several key regional leaders have pulled out of the meeting at the last minute. Solomon Islands prime minister Matthew Wale cancelled his appearance following a no-confidence motion lodged against him by home affairs minister Manasseh Maelanga. Fiji’s prime minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Vanuatu’s prime minister Jotham Napat, and Samoa’s leader La’auli Leuatea Schmidt also will not attend. Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese confirmed he will still attend the summit. Albanese stated that Australia has a duty to help Pacific nations thrive, noting that the country's engagement in regional security and climate action matters during a time of strategic competition. Albanese also noted that the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme will continue despite recent debates over immigration cuts, as workers from the Pacific provide critical economic benefits to Australia's regional industries.
