Pakistan's Supreme Court orders former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be moved to a private hospital for medical examination

Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered authorities to move imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a comprehensive medical examination. The ruling follows months of concern from his family and personal physicians regarding his health, particularly the vision in his right eye. The court also granted Khan weekly family meetings and twice-weekly telephone calls with his sons, who reside in London. While the court's decision aims to safeguard Khan's constitutional right to medical care, the government has filed a review petition, arguing that the court skipped legal procedures by not consulting prison authorities first. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the government prefers Khan to be examined at a public hospital, noting that the government's own ranks appear divided on the matter. The order was issued after Khan had been in Adiala Jail since 2023 following a conviction in a graft case. The court warned that the meeting and medical relief granted to Khan should not be used for political gain.
