Abdullah Tawfiq Kanaan highlights Israeli impact on Palestinian education as West Bank students return to school

Secretary-General of the Royal Commission for Jerusalem Affairs, Abdullah Tawfiq Kanaan, stated that the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza and all Palestine demonstrates a crime against humanity and education. Kanaan noted that Israel has destroyed 179 government schools and approximately 105 UNRWA schools during its aggression against Gaza, rendering many educational institutions inoperable through deliberate bombing and sabotage. In the West Bank, the new academic year began with students facing daily raids, closures, and demolitions. The Palestinian Education Ministry reported that 846,289 students returned to schools across the occupied West Bank, while the ministry opened four additional schools in remote and Bedouin areas to mitigate threats of forced displacement. The ministry also allocated $1.5 million to provide buses for students in affected areas. In Gaza, the ministry announced that administrative and teaching staff will return on Sept. 16, while students are expected to resume classes on Sept. 19. The ministry is preparing 700 in-person learning sites for more than half a million students in the Gaza Strip.
