Before the shooting, the FBI contacted Vazquez's mother on May 14, warning her that her son was making concerning comments about school shootings on the dark web. Vazquez's mother notified the staff at the park mental health facility on May 15. However, on the morning of the May 18 shooting, the facility informed her that Vazquez was missing. Video surveillance showed he left the property the night before. Vazquez had been hospitalized in January 2026 for expressing a desire to carry out a school shooting. In 2014, police confiscated 26 guns from his father due to Vazquez's alarming behavior and Nazi idolization. He met the other shooter, Cain Clark, online and both were radicalized online. The facility stated that neither the center nor its employees are responsible for Vazquez's actions, asserting that only he and his coconspirator bear responsibility for their conduct.
