While Talarico identifies as a progressive Christian, Republicans have highlighted his past statements to paint him as radical or blasphemous. Specifically, Talarico previously stated that God is nonbinary and that he is a Christian who hates Christianity. Republican leaders, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, have used these comments to contrast Talarico with Ken Paxton. Paxton, the Republican nominee, has championed religious liberty and the Ten Commandments. During the GOP midterm convention, U.S. Representative Brandon Gill and President Trump referenced Talarico's unconventional views. President Trump noted that Talarico claimed the Ten Commandments are a form of fascism.
