Maryland Attorney General's Office Investigates Fatal Shooting During Bel Air Traffic Stop
The Maryland Attorney General's Office Independent Investigations Division has assumed the investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting in Bel Air. The incident occurred Saturday night around 9 p.m. during a routine traffic stop on Franklin Street. According to Bel Air Police Chief Charles Moore, a physical altercation broke out between an officer and a driver, leading the officer to fire his weapon and strike the man. The man was subsequently flown to Shock Trauma for treatment but was later pronounced dead. The officer, who had been with the department for a short time, sustained injuries during the fight and was released from the hospital after receiving treatment. The Independent Investigations Division will release the body-worn camera footage within 20 business days. Police officials stated there is no ongoing threat to the community and are requesting any private surveillance or cell phone video from residents to assist with the investigation.
