New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces criticism from victims' families and politicians for attending the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the 25th anniversary remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero on Friday, despite a petition signed by over 100,000 people requesting he stay away. Victims' families and several politicians, including former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former Governor George Pataki, expressed that Mamdani's presence was disrespectful or offensive due to his progressive politics and his association with streamer Hasan Piker, who once stated the United States "deserved 9/11." Mamdani, who was nine years old during the attacks, stated that he wants the focus of the week to be on the families whose loved ones were stolen by the act of terror. He also recently released documents showing that officials from the Giuliani administration onwards repeatedly misled the public regarding air quality after the attacks. During the ceremony, Mamdani greeted former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. While President Trump visited the Pentagon for the remembrance, Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to attend the New York ceremony. The event also included a new observance to honor first responders and survivors who died from 9/11-related illnesses in the years following the 2001 attacks.
