B.C. Hydro officials locate a mysterious floating island in a British Columbia reservoir 18 miles from its original spot

B.C. Hydro officials have located a mysterious floating island in the Williston Reservoir, north of MacKenzie, in British Columbia. The tree-covered landmass was first spotted by residents and confirmed by the utility company B.C. Hydro using satellite data on July 20. By August 5, the island had vanished from satellite imagery, leading officials to believe it had disappeared. However, the island was recently found along the shoreline in a position more than 18 miles from where it was originally seen. Bob Gammer, a spokesman for B.C. Hydro, stated that the island likely formed over several years as driftwood accumulated along the shore and plants and trees took root in the decomposing wood. He explained that the island likely broke free from the shore due to rising water levels in the reservoir. B.C. Hydro warned visitors to keep a safe distance from the unstable island, noting that the surface is unsafe to land on or climb across because it is a loose collection of logs and decaying woody debris.
