A Philippine court ordered the arrest of Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday over charges that she publicly threatened to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and two other people assassinated. The charges stem from a 2024 online news conference where Duterte stated she would have the president, his wife, and then-House of Representatives Speaker Martin Romualdez killed by an assassin if she herself was killed. Vice President Sara Duterte was already impeached by the House of Representatives in May over these threats and alleged financial anomalies. The Philippine Senate, acting as an impeachment court, began her televised trial in July. If convicted, Duterte may be permanently disqualified from holding office and could be prohibited from seeking the presidency in 2028. Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian called on the Philippine National Police to take the threats seriously and investigate the source of the claims. Gatchalian stated that the government should protect the vice president from any threats. A lawyer for Duterte denied the charges and stated she has no intention of evading the law and will continue to exercise her legal remedies.
