President Abelardo de la Espriella Announces $30 Billion Reconstruction Plan for Earthquake-Stricken Colombia

President Abelardo de la Espriella has announced a reconstruction strategy to address the physical losses caused by the August 10th earthquake, which are estimated at approximately 30 billion pesos. The administration announced the creation of the 'Fondo Milagro' (Miracle Fund) to structure this recovery plan, modeled after the successful reconstruction of the Cafetero Axis. To facilitate rebuilding, President Abelardo de la Espriella appealed to the financial sector to lower interest rates for affected families. The administration also activated a USD 200 million credit from the World Bank to assist victims. Housing Minister Jaime Andr茅s Beltr贸n has been tasked with managing the aid and coordinating with construction companies to ensure resources are and used efficiently. While the 30 billion pesos figure represents direct physical losses, experts like Jorge Ivan Gonzalez note that the total reconstruction cost may be higher. Gonzalez suggested that a comprehensive tax reform is necessary to fund the nation's recovery, emphasizing the need for a coordinated fiscal policy between the national government, departments, and municipalities.
