Daniel Read died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a three-hour standoff with police in West Omaha.
Daniel Read, a 44-year-old man with an outstanding felony warrant, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday evening. The incident began when Omaha Police Department officers spotted Read driving erratically at speeds exceeding 100 mph near 30th and Cuming Streets. A police helicopter tracked Read as he moved toward the 145th and Shirley Street area, where he eventually left his vehicle and forced his way into a nearby home. Inside the residence, Read pointed a firearm at a woman who was alone in the house, prompting her to escape to safety. Once the woman left, a SWAT team and crisis negotiators surrounded the home. For approximately three hours, negotiators exchanged text messages with Read while officers used flash bangs and shouted commands. At the end of the text exchange, officers heard multiple gunshots from inside the house. A police drone was deployed to inspect the interior, where officers located Read dead. No officers fired their weapons during the standoff, and no other individuals were injured. Because Read died while in police custody, the case will be reviewed by a grand jury as required by state law.
