Indian Rocks Beach City Commission approves ban on smoking and vaping on public beaches

The Indian Rocks Beach City Commission approved a new ordinance prohibiting cigarette smoking and the use of vaping devices on its public beaches. The ban took effect immediately upon approval. City officials stated the goal of the measure is to reduce secondhand smoke exposure for visitors and eliminate cigarette butt litter from the shoreline. Lan Vaughan, the Mayor of Indian Rocks Beach, noted that regular beach cleanups and sand-sifting machines have not fully eliminated cigarette waste from the sand. The ban aims to keep the beaches cleaner and and protect local wildlife, such as turtles and birds. Beachgoers who wish to smoke can use a designated smoking area in the county parking lot. Enforcement will initially focus on educating visitors about the new rules. Repeat violators of the ordinance could face fines of up to $500 or up to 60 days in jail.
