Portland Police Shot and Killed Jacob Hastings Following a High-Speed Pursuit and Gunpoint Vehicle Theft
Portland police shot and killed 37-year-old Jacob Hastings on Thursday night after he threatened workers at Nova Seafood with a firearm and stole several vehicles at gunpoint. The incident began around 9:32 p.m. when authorities responded to reports of gunfire near Spring and Oak streets. Hastings fled the scene in a stolen pickup truck, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit through downtown Portland. The chase concluded at the Casco Bay Lines terminal, where Hastings crashed his vehicle and was eventually shot by officers after failing to follow commands and reaching toward his waistband. Hastings had a long criminal history including convictions for robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary. He was previously a member of the white supremacy group Aryan Nations and was listed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry as a Tier III lifetime registrant. The Maine Attorney General's Office will investigate the use of deadly force. Officers Anthony George, Jordin Jackson, and Greg Ishihara were placed on administrative leave following the shooting.
