President Abelardo de la Espriella Orders a Comprehensive Reform of the National Traffic Code to Reduce Costs for Citizens

President Abelardo de la Espriella has instructed the Ministry of Transportation to begin drafting a new National Traffic Code to replace the current legislation, which has been in effect for over 20 years. The administration announced that the current system often imposes excessive costs on families, where fines, interests, and towing fees can exceed a full minimum wage. Minister of Transportation Elsa Noguera stated that the reform aims to protect road safety while eliminating unnecessary procedures and establishing fair, proportional fines based on a driver's economic capacity. Key improvements will include lower costs for towing and parking, more affordable training courses, extended license validity, and reasonable deadlines for technical-mechanical reviews. The administration also prioritized the reconstruction of earthquake-affected regions, with President Abelardo de la Espriella emphasizing that the government must manage public resources with responsibility to avoid waste and improvisation during the recovery process.
