Dawadi received a warning from a colleague and a parent that floodwaters were approaching. He ordered students to move toward higher ground and instructed bus drivers to turn back before the school was submerged. One bus of students had already arrived, but Dawadi told the driver to turn back just before the old bridge beside it crossed a new bridge collapsed.
