The European Commission prepares Affordable Housing Act to regulate short-term rentals across Europe
The European Commission is preparing an Affordable Housing Act to address the housing crisis in Europe. This legislation aims to provide a legal framework for local authorities to manage and restrict short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs, in areas identified as experiencing housing stress. According to a leaked draft of the legislation, the act could give authorities greater scope to implement quantitative limits and protections for existing operators. The European Commission stated in a December statement that the EU level must play a stronger role in supporting and coordinating national, regional, and local efforts to address the housing crisis. The commission is scheduled to discuss the mandate for this new legislation during a meeting on September 9. The act seeks to clarify local authorities' power to crack down on short-term rentals while balancing the needs of the tourism economy and the impact on small businesses.
