Honorio Henríaquez Criticizes Cabinet Absence During 2027 National Budget Debates

Henríaquez stated that the presence of cabinet heads is a matter of respect for lawmakers, noting that they must attend to show their faces in the debates. Simultaneously, the administration of Abelardo de la Espriella presented a 2027 budget that increased total spending from $575 billion pesos to $635 billion pesos. The administration announced that this $60 billion peso increase is a result of "sinceramiento" (account balancing), addressing underestimations in the previous government's budget. Key areas of adjustment include $37 billion pesos in debt service, $6.5 billion pesos in pensions, $4.5 billion pesos in public official salaries, and $9.6 billion pesos for the fuel price subsidy fund. While the administration presented the budget as a necessary correction of the previous government's fiscal strategy, some experts noted that much of the debt service is a matter of choice rather than obligation. The administration also included a new article allowing for the early redemption of debt bonds without requiring a specific budget operation, providing a tool for future fiscal adjustments.
