Colombian Geological Service Identifies Two Distinct Seismic Behaviors Following Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake in Choc贸
The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) has identified two distinct seismic behaviors in the Choc贸 department following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred on August 10. The main event, centered in San Jos茅 del Palmar at a depth of 103 kilometers, released energy equivalent to between 125 and 130 Hiroshima bombs. Analysis by the National Seismological Network of Colombia (RSNC) revealed that the region is experiencing both a sequence of replicas and a seismic swarm. The replicas are concentrated around the San Jos茅 del Palmar epicenter at depths between 70 and 105 kilometers, following a pattern of decreasing frequency over time. In contrast, the seismic swarm consists of over 900 earthquakes occurring at shallower depths of 30 to 60 kilometers in areas such as Sip铆, Istmina, and Litoral del San Juan. The SGC stated that the August 10 earthquake, caused by a rupture of approximately 100 to 120 kilometers of the Nazca plate, altered the geological forces in the subsurface. This shift in energy and stress may have triggered the seismic swarm. The SGC noted that the seismic swarm does not allow for the prediction of future major earthquakes or their specific magnitudes.
