King Haakon VIII of Norway takes oath of allegiance as the nation mourns the death of King Harald V

King Haakon VIII of Norway officially assumed the throne following the death of his father, King Harald V, who died at age 89. The new monarch pledged an oath of allegiance to the country's constitution and laws in parliament on Tuesday. While King Haakon VIII took the oath, his wife, Queen Mette-Marit, was unable to attend due to complications following a lung transplant she underwent in June. King Harald V died while being treated for haemolytic anaemia at Oslo University Hospital. Following his death, the royal family transferred his coffin to the Palace Chapel in Oslo, where it remains on display for the public to pay their respects. The funeral is scheduled for September 9 at Oslo Cathedral, where the late monarch will be laid to rest in the royal mausoleum at Akershus Fortress. The transition of power follows a period of public scrutiny regarding the royal family's scandals, including Queen Mette-Marit's ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the rape convictions of her son, Marius Borg Høiby. Despite these controversies, a recent poll showed that support for the monarchy has increased to 72 percent.
