An extreme heat warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday for the coast, inland valleys, and deserts, where temperatures could be 10-15 degrees above average. A heat advisory will follow through Thursday evening for the coastal areas, while the mountains will remain under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service issued these warnings because heat illnesses increase during periods of extreme heat. Residents are urged to stay in air-conditioned rooms and avoid the sun. The National Weather Service noted that car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. High humidity is contributing to the discomfort, with moisture coming from monsoonal flow and record-high ocean temperatures. The humidity is also driving scattered thunderstorms. While some relief is expected on Thursday and Friday, cooler temperatures are not likely to arrive before next Sunday.
