A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Flores on Saturday morning, resulting in at least 68 deaths and over 200 injuries. The disaster, which is Indonesia's deadliest since 2022, has caused significant structural damage to buildings, schools, and government offices across East Nusa Tenggara province. Berton SP Panjaitan, an official at Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), reported that the quake triggered landslides and blocked several roads, making access to isolated communities challenging. Thousands of residents have been evacuated and are currently sheltering in makeshift tents due to fears of ongoing aftershocks. The earthquake occurred approximately 68 kilometers northwest of Ende. While a tsunami warning was initially issued, it was later lifted. Rescue teams are currently digging through rubble to locate survivors, while aircraft are being deployed to deliver food and supplies to the affected regions.
