Morgan Stanley Wealth Management Suspends Relationship with Shook Research Following $6 Million Payment Scandal

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management has suspended its partnership with Shook Research following reports of an undisclosed $6 million payment made by R.J. Shook to a former Forbes editor. The decision follows news that Shook personally paid Randall Lane, who served as Forbes Chief Content Officer, after Shook sold his research firm to a private equity group. While the payment was a personal gift, the news raised concerns regarding the transparency and integrity of the industry-standard rankings. Barry Krouk, Chief Operating Officer of Field Management at Morgan Stanley, noted that the firm will provide alternative marketing resources for its advisors. Shook Research maintains that the payment was not linked to the rankings methodology and that Randall Lane was not involved in the research process. However, Forbes responded to the news by firing Randall Lane, stating that the payment was inconsistent with their principles of trust and transparency. The move marks a significant shift for the firm, as many of its elite advisors were previously featured prominently in the Forbes and Shook Research rankings.
