Rodrigo Lara Criticizes New Bogotá Photo Radar Cameras as an Infamous Business

Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara has questioned the installation of 41 new photo radar cameras in Bogotá, describing the initiative as an 'infamous business.' The Ministry of Mobility announced that 18 of these cameras will begin operating in key corridors, including Avenida NQS and Avenida Las Américas, starting in September. While the Secretary of Mobility, Maria Fernanda Ortiz, stated the strategy aims to save 50 lives and prevent 900 injuries over four years, critics argue the system may prioritize revenue over safety. Abelardo De La Espriella supported the minister's critique, calling the measure a 'scandalous business' and an 'abuse' on citizens. Furthermore, more than 30 council members backed a request from Julián Forero to suspend the new cameras until their legality and technical safety criteria are verified. They noted that while automatic cameras have generated over half a billion pesos in revenue, the number of fatalities on Bogotá roads allegedly increased by 21.8% during the first half of 2026.
