Russian Fuel Crisis Deepens as Ukrainian Attacks Damage Oil Refineries and Infrastructure

Russian oil production and exports are facing significant pressure due to ongoing Ukrainian attacks on refineries and processing facilities. Seaborne shipments of Russian crude oil fell to 3.46 million barrels a day in the weeks leading up to August 23, while production levels reached a six-year low in July. These strikes have triggered a fuel crisis affecting at least 30 regions, causing long queues and fuel shortages in major cities like Moscow and Sochi. To mitigate the shortages, Russia is redirecting oil flows and seeking imports from nations like India and China. However, critics argue that the current isolation makes daily imports of 200,000 tons of fuel difficult to maintain. The crisis is also impacting neighboring Central Asian nations, such as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which previously relied heavily on Russian petrol. These nations are now seeking new suppliers and diversifying their energy sources, while China benefits from a surge in electric vehicle sales across the region.
