San Jose Police Sergeant Matt Walsh Stabilized After Being Shot by Armed Robbery Suspect Anthony Chavez

San Jose police sergeant Matt Walsh was stabilized after being shot twice during a gunfight with armed robbery suspect Anthony Chavez on Tuesday. The confrontation occurred after Chavez, who had an extensive criminal history, fled from police in a stolen Chevrolet Tahoe and forced his way into a family's home on Goodyear Street. Police Chief Paul Joseph stated that Chavez was wanted for multiple armed robberies and had been released on parole despite several new charges. During the shootout, officers from the MERGE unit entered the home and found Chavez hiding in a bathroom. He opened fire, striking Walsh before officers returned fire and killed Chavez at the scene. The family inside the home, including children, were successfully evacuated by officers. Homeowner Brett Bymaster expressed gratitude for the bravery of the officers who protected his family. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather details regarding the shooting, which was the second officer-involved shooting of the year for the San Jose Police Department.
