Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Launches Operation Economic Outcast to Sever Iran's Financial Lifelines
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new campaign against the Iranian regime titled Operation Economic Outcast. The objective of the initiative is to sever every economic lifeline sustaining the regime until Tehran stands alone. In the first round of the campaign, more than 60 entities, individuals, and vessels were designated. Among these, Bank Melli was identified as a primary target, with the administration's goal to shutter every foreign branch of the institution. The campaign follows a period of intense economic pressure on Iran. The administration announced that the new sanctions are intended to ramp up pressure on Tehran, while the Iranian government has reported economic damage exceeding $270 billion. Domestic reports indicate that inflation has reached nearly 88 percent, and food prices have more than doubled in the last year. While the administration's actions are aimed at the regime, many Iranians report that the sanctions are hitting the general population hardest. Families are struggling with rising costs, and many citizens are facing mass layoffs. Despite the economic strain, the Iranian people have demonstrated a level of resilience, with many continuing to work and maintain daily life despite the ongoing conflict and uncertainty.
