The U.S. Department of Justice announced a $400 million settlement with TikTok and its parent company ByteDance to resolve a 2024 lawsuit regarding children's privacy. The settlement addresses allegations that the company violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 by collecting personal data from children under 13 without parental consent. Under the terms of the agreement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately and an additional $100 million once a prior consent decree is vacated. The administration announced that the settlement is one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a children's online privacy case. Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. stated that the priority is ensuring children are protected online while holding companies accountable for the personal information they manage.
