Francisco Garduño Yáñez faces judicial review to determine if conditions for criminal trial suspension were met
A federal judge in Ciudad Juárez will determine if Francisco Garduño Yáñez fulfilled the conditions required to suspend the criminal trial for the illicit use of public service. The trial stems from a 2023 fire at a migratory station where 40 men were killed and 27 were injured. Francisco Garduño Yáñez, the former head of the National Institute of Migration, currently serves as the director general of the Centros de Formación para el Trabajo. The judge must decide if he met six conditions, including a public apology, medical attention for survivors, and financial compensation for victims. While the administration announced his new appointment in early 2026, the former commissioner faced criticism from civil organizations and families of the victims. Some families expressed that the public apology was insufficient and that the conditions were not fully met. The hearing was postponed because Francisco Garduño Yáñez did not attend physically, despite the requirement for his presence. Legal representatives for the victims requested that the judge reprimand him for his absence, noting the inequality faced by families who traveled from various countries to attend.
