Jorge EliƩcer Laverde Vargas takes office as Colombia's General Controller of the Republic to combat corruption.
Jorge EliƩcer Laverde Vargas was officially installed as the General Controller of the Republic for the 2026-2030 period on Tuesday, August 25. During the ceremony in La Dorada, Caldas, the new controller emphasized his commitment to tackling corruption and the loss of public resources, noting that Colombia loses nearly $50 billion annually due to inefficiency. President Abelardo De la Espriella officially positioned Laverde Vargas and tasked him with creating an elite group to identify mismanagement from the previous government. While Laverde Vargas faces some anonymous complaints regarding his family's assets and potential conflicts of interest, he has not faced formal judicial actions. To protect his position, he appointed jurist Ricardo Gaviria to represent him in court. Laverde Vargas aims to make the fiscal control organism preventive and decentralized, striving to establish a 'house of transparency' to recover the nation's moral authority.
