The Philippine Coast Guard searches for survivors after a fire on the MV June Aster ferry kills five people.
The Philippine Coast Guard is conducting a search and rescue operation off the western Philippine island of Palawan after a passenger ferry caught fire. The fire, which broke out on the MV June Aster, killed at least five people and left scores of passengers missing. Authorities reported that the vessel carried a total of 134 people, including 117 passengers and 17 crew members. As of the latest update, 43 individuals have been rescued, while more than 80 people remain unaccounted for. The ferry departed from Baseco, Manila, and was bound for Coron, a popular tourist destination. Rescuers have faced challenges due to thick smoke, extreme heat, and the risk of explosions, which have hindered entry into the vessel. The Philippine Coast Guard is also investigating the cause of the fire and potential safety violations, such as whether the vessel was overloaded and if passengers were provided with life jackets. Some rescued passengers were found without life jackets during the incident.
