Seattle Named Top Domestic Destination for Labor Day Weekend as AAA Reports Rising Travel Costs
Seattle is the most popular domestic destination for the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend, according to booking data from the American Automobile Association (AAA). The city ranks first on AAA's top ten list, followed by Orlando, Boston, Denver, and New York. High demand for Alaska cruises and national park visits are primary drivers for the popularity of these destinations. Travelers face increased costs this year, with average roundtrip airfare for domestic bookings rising 2% year- over-year. International airfare averages $790, which is nearly 20% higher than last year. Hotel bookings are also more expensive, with domestic rates rising 9% and international rates rising 12%. Conversely, cruises departing from U.S. ports are 4% cheaper than last year, averaging $2,700 per booking. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is expected to be a busy hub, with approximately one million passengers moving through the airport each day. Authorities advise passengers to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights to account for increased security wait times. The airport has recently completed several upgrades, including the C Concourse Expansion and the SEA Gateway, to improve the passenger experience.
