Aleksandar Vucic dissolves Serbian parliament and calls for snap elections on October 25

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic signed an order on Wednesday to dissolve the country's parliament and called for snap elections to be held on October 25. Vucic stated that the election results will show the will of the people and the direction of the country. The move follows two years of student-led protests sparked by the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which left 16 people dead. Protesters have accused the government of corruption and shoddy construction work. Prime Minister Đuro Macut asked Vucic to dissolve parliament to mitigate social tensions. While Vucic's second and final term as president ends in 2027, he is not allowed to run for another presidential term. However, his party, the Serbian Progressive Party, has nominated him to run for prime minister if the party wins a majority in the upcoming vote. Vucic has faced calls to step down since 2023 amid allegations of electoral fraud and concerns regarding Serbia's stalled EU membership bid.
