Heavy rain and severe storms across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions triggered flash flooding and travel disruptions on Thursday.

Severe weather systems dumped significant rainfall across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions on Thursday, causing flash flooding and disrupting transportation. In southwestern New Jersey, stalled storms dropped 4 to 6 inches of rain in a few hours, requiring numerous water rescues in the Glassboro area. Meanwhile, police reported extreme flooding in Elizabeth and surrounding areas near Newark Liberty International Airport. In New York City, a Severe Storm Watch and Flood Watch were in York City, the Hudson Valley, and much of New Jersey. Flooding was reported from the Gloucester County Emergency Management spokesperson Andrew Halter and the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx to Staten Island. At LaGuardia Airport, nearly 100 flights were canceled and over 200 were delayed due to the heavy rain. The storms were driven by a cold front pushing into the Northeast from the Ohio Valley. While the rounds of storms have lost some intensity by midnight, rain is expected to continue into early Friday morning. New showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in southern New England, Delaware, and Maryland on Friday.
