The beloved bald eagle Jackie has died at the age of 14 after a period of intensive medical care.
Jackie, a famous bald eagle who became a global sensation through a livestreamed nest in Big Bear Valley, died on Monday at the age of 14. The raptor had been receiving intensive care at the Ojai Raptor Center since mid-July after being found weak and unable to fly following a scuffle with other eagles. Veterinarians determined that Jackie suffered from severe anemia, though the exact cause of the illness remained a mystery despite extensive testing, including a CT scan and bone marrow biopsy. She received oxygen therapy and constant monitoring until she succumbed to her condition. Jackie was the matriarch of the nest since 2017 and was known for her partnership with the eagle Shadow. Together, they raised six chicks. Following her death, observers noted that her former partner Shadow has already begun to find a new mate. The eagle's legacy continues to be honored by the Friends of Big Bear Valley, which launched a $10 million effort to preserve the natural habitat of the nest.
