Raelynn McMurchy launched an online petition to urge Oklahoma regulators to address the rising costs of electricity, following a personal shock at a $1,373 bill that exceeded her monthly rent. The petition highlights a growing concern for residents as electricity prices climb faster than the overall cost of living, particularly during hot summer months. Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) CEO Leigh Anne Strahler acknowledged the difficulty of high bills, noting that the utility is investing in grid improvements and new power generation to meet growing demand. While PSO initially requested a 15% rate increase, a settlement with Attorney General Gentner Drummond limited the increase to 1%. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission regulates these costs and maintains rules to protect customers during extreme weather. For instance, utilities are prohibited from shutting off power when the heat index reaches 101 degrees. Despite these regulations, many residents still struggle with affordability, leading to local nonprofits like the Helping Hand Ministry to provide financial assistance to prevent customers from losing power.
