Bill Ackman's daughter Lucy receives first experimental mitochondrial transplantation in human eye

Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital extracted mitochondria from Lucy's leg muscles and injected them into the fluid of both eyes. The procedure was granted emergency approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under a system that allows trial treatment for patients in urgent need. Following the injection, Lucy's pupils responded to light and she reported seeing shapes and shadows through her left eye. While the immediate response was strong, the effect faded after approximately four weeks. The treatment did not cause inflammation or rejection. Bill Ackman announced that the family has seen a sustained benefit from the initial injection, though it is weaker than the immediate response. He plans to inject her eyes with more frequency. To support further research, Bill Ackman and his wife, Neri Oxman, established the Ackman Oxman Institute in Manhattan, with Bill Ackman committing roughly $400 million to the project.
