Claudia Sheinbaum criticizes Supreme Court ministers for seeking to reinstate private medical insurance using public funds.
President Claudia Sheinbaum reproached the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) for proposing to return to high-spending private medical insurance for court staff. During a budget analysis for 2027, six ministers voted to solicit public funds for these private policies, a move Sheinbaum argued constitutes a privilege because it is financed by the state treasury. Sheinbaum stated that public servants should use the state-provided health services of the ISSSTE or pay for private insurance using their own income. She criticized the court's tendency to maintain old privileges, urging the members to shake off the 'spirits of the past' and behave with humility. While the court approved a budget proposal of 6,104.5 million pesos, which includes a 12.7 percent increase, the majority of the Pleno supported the return to private insurance despite the court's previous commitment to reducing privileges. Sheinbaum emphasized that while public servants have the freedom to use their income as they decide, they should not transfer the cost of private services to the public.
