Nalleli de la Torre and Alejandra Alpuche Válquez Analyze Mexico's Declining PISA 2025 Education Scores

Mexico's performance in the PISA 2025 evaluation shows a downward trend in reading, mathematics, and science scores compared to previous years. The OECD report indicates that while Mexico's scores decreased in reading and mathematics, they increased slightly in science. This global decline is attributed to factors such as the generalization of digital devices, a decline in reading habits, and a lower inclination for curiosity among students. Nalleli de la Torre, a researcher at the Ibero-American University (ITESO), noted that the results should be used as a resource to identify areas for improvement and strengthen learning processes. She highlighted the resilience of Mexican students, noting that 12% of the highest scores were achieved by students in segments with the lowest economic conditions. Alejandra Alpuche Válquez, coordinator general of Ibero Prep Puebla and Tlaxcala, emphasized that the results should not be reduced to a simple ranking. She noted that the students who took the test were around 10 or 11 years old during the COVID-19 pandemic, which created a significant educational lag. She also pointed out that the use of artificial intelligence in schools often replaces reasoning and thinking processes, warning that more technology does not necessarily mean more learning.
