Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo presents constitutional reform to require exclusive Mexican nationality for top executive positions

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo submitted a constitutional reform proposal to the Chamber of Deputies to ensure that candidates for the presidency, governorships, and the Head of Government of Mexico City hold exclusive Mexican nationality. The reform aims to address a legal void that currently allows for interpretative confusion regarding dual nationality. Under the new proposal, candidates must renounce any foreign nationality before registering, and must not acquire or invoke a different nationality while holding office. Luisa María Alcalde, the legal counselor for the presidency, explained that the reform modifies articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Constitution. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that the objective is to ensure that the national interest of Mexico stands above any interest of the foreign states. This move aligns with other recent reforms regarding re-election limits and nepotism, which have received significant public support. The reform will be debated by the legislature starting September 1, 2026.
