Claudia Sheinbaum defends Mexico's sovereignty after Donald Trump publishes map showing Mexico and Canada annexed to the United States

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to a new provocation from President Donald Trump by reaffirming Mexico's status as a free and independent nation. The administration announced a map on Truth Social showing Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and several Caribbean islands covered in the American flag. The map also features the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California renamed as the "Gulf of America." President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is neither a colony nor a protectorate of any foreign country. This response follows a period of commercial tension where President Donald Trump suggested Mexico could only offer the United States "tomatoes and tamales." Despite these comments, President Donald Trump noted he respects Claudia Sheinbaum and does not plan to break off commercial relations. In addition to the map, the administration announced several other geographical changes, including renaming New Mexico to "New America" and Lake Ontario to "Lake America." The administration also announced the renaming of the Department of Security to the Department of War.
