Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirms Ruben Rocha Moya will not return to the governorship of Sinaloa

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has officially ruled out the return of Ruben Rocha Moya to the governorship of Sinaloa. After the governor with a license briefly announced his intention to return to office on Friday, the administration announced that the decision was a personal one and not supported by the federal government. Sheinbaum Pardo stated that the state's local Congress must now appoint a new interim governor to serve until the next elections in June 2027. The decision follows allegations from the United States Department of Justice regarding Rocha Moya's ties to organized crime and drug trafficking. While Rocha Moya claimed there were insufficient elements of proof to sustain his participation in penal conduct, the administration maintained that it is more appropriate for an official under investigation to remain out of office. The administration also clarified that the General Prosecutor’s Office continues to investigate the ten people identified by the U.S. government, including Rocha Moya. Opposition leaders, such as Senator Ricardo Anaya Cortés, have criticized the move, arguing that Rocha Moya should face justice and be extradited to the United States.
