Scott Bessent Announces New Sanctions to Isolate Iran as Ship Strike Occurs in Strait of Hormuz

The administration announced a new series of measures, dubbed "Operation Economic Outcast," to isolate the Iranian regime and compel it toward negotiations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented the broad outlines of these measures, which include determinations against five critical sectors—digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping—to target the Iranian economy. The administration also expanded secondary sanctions threats to include nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels, while specifically targeting the global financial links of Iranian oil shipping magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani. Simultaneously, an oil tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, disabling the vessel but leaving the crew safe. While the administration's sanctions aim to induce economic pain, Iran has dismissed the plan, with parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf claiming the U.S. is not in an economic position to further restrict relations. China has also signaled its intent to safeguard its own interests against these unilateral sanctions. As the conflict continues, the administration remains focused on using economic pressure to avoid further major military action while managing domestic oil reserves.
