Social Security Administration Schedules September Payments for 74 Million Beneficiaries

The Social Security Administration will distribute regular monthly payments to nearly 74 million beneficiaries this month. For those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), payments will be issued on Tuesday, Sept. 1, providing the first SSI checks of the month for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Unlike traditional Social Security, which is paid based on a birth date, SSI payments typically occur on the first of the month unless the date falls on a weekend or holiday. Traditional Social Security benefits will be issued on three specific Wednesdays in September. Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th will be paid on Sept. 9; those born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on Sept. 16; and those born between the 21st and 31st will be paid on Sept. 23. The administration announced that the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment will be officially announced on Oct. 14. While the maximum monthly benefit for 2026 is $5,181, the average monthly benefit for retired workers is approximately $2,071.
