Nigerien military government contains attempted mutiny in Niamey with Russian assistance
Niger's military government successfully contained an attempted mutiny in the capital, Niamey, on Saturday. The uprising began at Base 101, a military installation at the Diori Hamani International Airport, where soldiers took fellow servicemen hostage before opening fire on sensitive sites, including the presidential palace and the state broadcaster. Nigerien authorities and the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that the rebellion was repelled with the assistance of the Africa Corps, a Russian force operating under the Ministry of Defence. The intervention highlights a significant shift in Niger's security partnerships, as the country has moved away from Western allies like France and the United States toward closer ties with Russia. While the mutiny was the most serious internal challenge to General Abdourahamane Tiani's rule since he seized power in a July 2023 coup, the precise motives of the mutineers remain unclear. However, analysts link the unrest to frustration over worsening insecurity and heavy military losses against armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIL. The administration announced that commercial activity in Niamey is returning to normal as security forces increase patrols around key sites.
