Louise Sandher-Jones Announces UK Military Exercises to Mobilise Strategic Reserve Veterans
The UK government will conduct a series of exercises starting in 2027 to test the mobilisation of the Strategic Reserve, a pool of roughly 95,000 retired and former regular personnel. Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones stated that these drills will evaluate the procedures for contacting, calling up, equipping, and returning veterans to military service during a potential major conflict. These exercises follow a 2025 Strategic Defence Review which recommended reinvigorating the reserve forces. The Ministry of Defence noted that the Strategic Reserve is distinct from the 32,000 active part-time reservists and includes expertise in fields such as cyber, intelligence, medicine, and communications. To improve the pool of available personnel, the government is also changing the law to raise the maximum call-up age for non-officer reservists from 55 to 65. The threshold for recall will also be widened to include warlike preparations, rather than requiring a national danger or attack. These reforms are intended to ensure the military can draw on a wealth of civilian and military experience at pace and scale during times of national need.
