Record-breaking rainfall in South Korea's Geoje city leaves one person dead and four others injured.

A landslide in the southern city of Geoje, South Korea, killed one person and injured four others following a period of record-breaking torrential rains. The Interior and Safety Ministry reported that the landslide struck an apartment building on Monday morning, where rescuers pulled out three residents; one was subsequently declared dead at a hospital. The heavy rains, which have pummelled the southern region since Saturday, resulted in the third-highest daily rainfall ever recorded in South Korea. In Geoje, the rainfall reached historic levels, causing widespread flooding, power outages for thousands of households, and the closure of several roads. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook instructed authorities to prioritize the rescue of stranded residents. The deluge also provided relief to drought-stricken areas, significantly increasing water storage rates in agricultural reservoirs. Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains in the Philippines also caused significant flooding and traffic snarls, leading to the suspension of government work and a shift to online learning for schools.
