The PanStar Acro, a South Korean container ship, has departed from Busan New Port to begin the nation's first commercial voyage via the Arctic route to Europe. The vessel is carrying 837 TEU of cargo, including car parts and chemical products, on a government-backed trial to test the route's viability as Middle Eastern conflicts disrupt global shipping. President Lee Jae Myung has prioritized Arctic shipping to establish the southeastern port of Busan as a global maritime hub. The route can reduce travel distance by 7,000 kilometers and save approximately 10 days compared of the traditional Suez Canal path. However, the voyage faces criticism from environmental groups who warn that increased shipping could accelerate polar ice melt. Additionally, the route risks creating friction with Western allies who seek to isolate Russia, though Seoul has consulted with Moscow regarding the journey.
